Calum Ward // How I became a record-breaker

Calum Ward arrived in ML1 simply to cover in the goalkeeping department. Extensive injuries saw a number of keepers ruled out of action, and Ward arrived off the back of playing in Finland to be the number three choice. That first six months saw Ward only take part in training sessions, with his only chance to make his debut dismissed due to other factors. But he did enough to earn a new contract, and with Jens Berthel Askou arriving, Ward saw it as a fresh start and backed himself to play more minutes. But even during pre-season, Ward never expected to play. But when first choice Aston Oxborough picked up an injury, Ward was drafted in and quickly became the keeper for the club. Supporters were wary, with a lack of first-team exposure of great concern regarding the Englishman. This paired with a couple of unfortunate errors early on in the season saw many write the keeper off. But not only did Ward, through the use of analysis with goalkeeping coach Neil Alexander and thorough training sessions, prove the doubters wrong; he has gone on to be an influential member in the team that has adopted a bold and advanced style of play. The system sees Ward sometimes become a centre-back and relies on the keeper being able to adapt well under pressure. Ward has passed with flying colours, as he has smashed the club-record for number of clean sheets in a season, with Ward currently on 20 in all competitions, surpassing Darren Randolph's decade-long record. He has also matched his goalkeeping coaches' record for number of clean sheets for a non-Rangers or Celtic goalkeeping in a Premiership season, with the team also setting a new record for nine consecutive clean sheets at home.

March: Gearing up for a big finish

The madness of the winter months was drawing to a close, and with Motherwell eliminated from the Scottish Cup, there were only two fixtures scheduled for the month. But with the Steelmen able to play their postponed fixture against Dundee, the month started at Dens Park with Motherwell going into the match knowing they could close the gap to those above, as they were the only team out of the top four playing in the Scottish Premiership. A trip to Celtic Park followed next, with March finishing at home against Hibernian. Every game at this stage has significant importance attached to it, and with the finish line in sight, points become even more important.

Strong performances don't guarantee points // Hearts 3-1 Motherwell

It would take a special performance for Motherwell to go to league leaders Hearts and come away with all three points. And after some openings in the first-half, the Steelmen attacked the second period with bravery and ambition. Emmanuel Longelo popped up with the opener early into the second-half, and from there, Motherwell could and probably should have been out of sight.  Elliot Watt, Tawanda Maswanhise, Elijah Just and Longelo all had opportunities but couldn't convert. And those missed chances would come back to bite Jens Berthel Askou's side, who would go on to concede three goals in the final 30 minutes for the second time at Tynecastle this season.  A controversial moment would decide the game once again, but with a clinical edge, Motherwell could have had the game done by that stage.

A rare home defeat // Motherwell 2-3 Falkirk

Two teams who have received an abundance of praise for their style of play and approach to matches all season faced off against each other at Fir Park, with Motherwell looking to pick up their first win in three matches with a win over Falkirk.  The last away side to come away from Fir Park was Falkirk, 12 games ago, back in October, and they started in the best way possible to make that back-to-back wins, with Barney Stewart continuing his dream season in the Premiership, scoring inside five minutes. Tawanda Maswanhise was bundled over in the box, but to the bemusement of everyone, referee Duncan Nicholson waved play on, and VAR stayed silent in what would have been a pivotal moment in the match after just seven minutes. Elliot Watt levelled the game with a scintillating volley from outside of the box, but Falkirk restored their advantage before the break. Motherwell tried to bring the game back to level, but when Ibrahim Said was judged to have fouled inside the box, Calvin Miller was presented with the chance to finish the game from 12 yards and made no mistake. Motherwell kept fighting and scored a consolation goal with the last kick of the ball through Maswanhise, but with factors outwith their control combining with a sublime Falkirk display, the Steelmen went down at home for the first time since October.
