Slipping up // Montrose 1-1 Motherwell

Motherwell started their Premier Sports Cup group in perfect fashion but knew slip ups had to be limited for the rest of the group action if they want to finish top and go through seeded. A trip to Montrose lay in wait and after Shane Blaney's opener, Motherwell failed to capitalise on the remainder of their chances in the match. In the end, they were punished as Montrose found the leveller with just five minutes to go. A point each, the match went to penalties to decide who came away with the bonus point. Five cool penalty takers for the Steelmen stepped up a slotted home and thanks to Aston Oxborough making a stop, Motherwell limited the damage done.

In their first competitive outing of the new season, Motherwell hosted League Two Edinburgh City in the Premier Sports Cup. Despite being heavy favourites, the visitors put up a fight and it took until the 43rd minute for Kofi Balmer to find the breakthrough. Dan Casey and Stephen O'Donnell added a second and a third before the end of the game.
