Motherwell B were looking to go one step better than they did at last year's SPFL Trust Trophy and were drawn to face Lowland League side East Stirlingshire. With Paul McGinn and Tom Sparrow providing the experience, the rest of the team was made up of our young academy graduates. Dominating most of the ball and creating enough chances to win the game, the young 'Well side couldn't get over the line in 90 minutes and were forced to penalties. Missing two penalties to win the game, East Stirlingshire snatched victory from under Motherwell's noses, meaning it was a night of lessons and harsh treatment for the young team.

It was a day of mixed emotions for the Steelmen as despite progressing to the next round of the Premier Sports Cup, their performance against Partick Thistle left a lot to be desired.  Zach Robinson was unlucky not to find the back of the net in the first half, with Liam Gordon and Dan Casey also going close, but neither side could break the deadlock in 90 minutes and as a result, the game went to penalties with Motherwell's progression already secured. Aston Oxborough did his part, saving two stops and almost a third. However, with O'Donnell, Seddon and Wells all missing, the bonus point headed back to Glasgow.

Also, as over 3000 'Well fans went to buy their season tickets for the new season, they had the option to donate £2 or £5 to the Motherwell FC Community Trust. As a result, over £4000 has been raised for the Trust which Dawn Middleton, CEO of the MFCCT, explains has went towards helping children participating in this year's summer football camps getting food and drink. Not only are children being fed, but they're getting to meet their heroes. As Middleton explains, a healthy relationship with the football department has seen a rota being produced that sees all the of the first-team squad visit the children taking part and spending time answering their questions and signing their autograph books that have been provided by the Well Society.

Motherwell knew a win would ensure their fate with regards to progressing to the next round would be firmly in their own hands.  A short trip to Hamilton to face League Two Clyde was the third match in Group G for the 'Well and they got off to a bright start early doors. With a list of chances, Moses Ebiye eventually found the breakthrough from Ewan Wilson's cross. More missed opportunities was punished when some slack defending costs the visitors and Clyde levelled. Not getting hung up on this setback, Lennon Miller won a penalty kick just minutes later before stick the resulting spot kick into the roof of the net. Filip Stuparevic made sure of the points with a fine curling effort with under 10 minutes to go and although the game could've been won by more, the job for the day was complete. Top of the group, with Partick Thistle still to play, it'll be a showdown on Sunday at Fir Park for that top spot in the group.
